Parvovirus cases on the rise in Manatee County

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Manatee County Animal Welfare shelter is warning the community in a rise of parvo cases.

In a social media post Friday, the shelter said it has taken in over 10 dogs who have tested positive for the virus in the past couple of months.

The shelter shared a map online showing the locations where the infected animals came from, warning those nearby to vaccinate their dogs against the virus.

What is Parvovirus?

Parvovirus is a contagious virus that affects puppies under six months old and unvaccinated adults.

The most common spread of the virus is infected feces, environments, or contaminated food and water bowls, according to the shelter.

Symptoms include severe vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, and dehydration.

Anyone with a dog is asked to vaccinate their pet against the virus and to seek immediate veterinary care if their pet shows symptoms.
