MADISON, Wis. -- Seven residents of the Dane County Jail participated in the inaugural Financial Literacy Program, recently launched in partnership with Summit Credit Union and the Black Men Coalition of Dane County.

The 6-week program offers financial literacy education to the incarcerated. The program is designed to provide information on financial basics like budgeting, banking services, emergency savings, and establishing credit.

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett highlighted the need for criminal justice reform within the county.

"By working with our community partners, we will continue to expand opportunities for programming to provide our jail residents with the tools they need to succeed in the community," said Sheriff Barrett.

After completing the program, each resident received a certificate and a check for $240 to begin putting their knowledge to work. The funds are provided through a Black Men Coalition of Dane County grant.
