How did this unincorporated community in east-central Brunswick County, near the intersection of U.S. 17 and N.C. 87, came to be known as Winnabow?

The area was named from the antebellum plantation of the Russell family, which was located nearby.

This census-designated community is mainly a farming community, there is really no large retail presence in the area, except Han-Dee Hugo's 21, a convenience store at the intersection of N.C. 87 and U.S. 17 South. There is also Mill Creek Farm Supply, an animal feed store, and Winnabow still has a post office.

Winnabow is also home to Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site, a major pre-Revolutionary port on the Cape Fear River, was razed by British troops in 1776 and never rebuilt.

In 2022, residents of the community petitioned for the area to be incorporated, but efforts to incorporate Winnabow into a town stalled.
