BRISTOL, W.Va. (WBOY) — Downed trees caused multiple telephone poles along U.S. Route 50 in Harrison County to snap, according to officials.
A 12 News reporter at the scene, which is near Bristol in Harrison County, was told by first responders that a tree in the woods on the eastbound side of the four-lane fell onto power lines; pressure on those power lines caused two poles on the westbound side of the highway to snap.
Powerlines fell across all four lanes, and traffic was closed in both directions. As of 5:41 p.m., the power to those lines has been turned off, and one lane on each side has been reopened—although travelers are still having to drive over the fallen lines.
The fallen lines also caused a brush fire in the area.
As of 5:41 p.m., 179 of the 205 Mon Power customers in Bristol did not have power, and 112 costumers in Salem also did not have power, according to the FirstEnergy outages map for West Virginia .
