Senators decided Wednesday they would not hold a trial on the two articles of impeachment levied against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by House Republicans.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday afternoon he would move to dismiss the charges. However, conservatives continued to push for a full trial, arguing Mayorkas repeatedly violated immigration and border security laws by allowing “millions of aliens” to enter the United States illegally and “unlawfully” remain in the country.

The House sent the articles of impeachment to the Senate Tuesday — about two months after they narrowly passed in the lower chamber .

Senators were sworn in as jurors at the start of the event. Ultimately, however, Democrats voted in unison to find the two articles of impeachment unconstitutional and dismissed the entire impeachment proceeding.
