HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Former attorney and convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has filed a notice of appeal in his federal financial crimes case.

Murdaugh was sentenced on April 1 to 40 years in prison for 22 federal financial crimes charges.

It came after he previously admitted to stealing millions from former clients and pleaded guilty to the 22 federal charges, including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.

As it stands right now, Murdaugh’s federal sentence will be served concurrently with his active state sentences for the murders of his wife and son, and the state financial offenses of which he previously pleaded guilty.

Sources confirmed to News 2 that the appeal is based on the length of the sentence being outside of the sentencing guidelines and plea agreement.
