The following information was provided by Appalachian Health Care. Restaurants and food stands are inspected one to four times per year, based on risk frequency, and institutional food service facilities are inspected four times per year.

Burger King

798 East Main Street, Jefferson

Grade: A

Score: 96.5

The restaurant received a 1.5-point demerit for food-contact surfaces needing to be better cleaned/sanitized. Several plastic containers in clean utensil area still had bits of sticker residue on them. Remove all sticker residue before and during the wash process. Noted one black plastic container in clean utensil area that had grease residue in the bottom. Corrected by moving this to the ware washing area. Fully remove all grease by pre-soaking and washing, before rinsing and sanitizing. The restaurant received a 1-point demerit for plumbing repairs needed. Address leak from pipe beneath sanitizing vat at three-comp. sink. Significant water is leaking behind ice machine. This is emptying from a plastic tube behind the ice machine and running along the back of the machine onto the floor. If tubing is for condensation, it should be properly routed through a tube or pipe to the floor drain with an air gap. The restaurant received a half-point demerit for personal cleanliness. Noted one employees actively working with food while wearing a watch. Remove all jewelry from arms and wrists to facilitate proper hand washing. The restaurant received a half-point demerit for physical facilities needing to be better cleaned/maintained. Additional cleaning needed in walk-in freezer along floors, in back dry goods area beneath shelves, and floor around vegetable prep sink where water is accumulating and bits of vegetable debris.

Burger King received scores of 95.5 and 95.5 on two previous inspections.

CJ’s Grocery

9270 NC Highway 194, Lansing

Score: 95.5

The store received a 1.5-point demerit for food-contact surfaces needing to be better cleaned/maintained. Food contact surfaces shall be clean to sight & touch. White blocks were washed, according to Person In Charge (PIC), but boards are heavily scored and cut. Cuts have absorbed liquids and when an alcohol wipe was applied, residue was present. Use one of the other two white boards, after wash, rinse and sanitizing steps, and have the scored/stained white board planed, sanded, or replaced. The store received a 1-point demerit for no ANSI certified food protection manager on site. The store received a half-point demerit for utensils, equipment and linens improperly stored/dried/handled. Clean utensil storage rack has raw ground beef fragments present. PIC sanitized air drying rack during the inspection. Keep areas where clean utensils are stored clean, and protect from contamination. The store received a half-point demerit for equipment, food and non-food contact surfaces needing to be better cleaned/maintained. Merchandise display case has jagged edges protruding from back side. Shelving under red liner is peeling and rusting. Unit not easy to clean. Rust present on components of meat grinder. The store received a half-point demerit for non-food contact surfaces needing to be better cleaned. Walk-in cooler shelving and floors present with dried blood and residue. More frequent and thorough cleaning needed of walk in cooler (shelving, walls, threshold of door and flooring). Shelf below prep table was present with dust and debris. More frequent cleaning needed of shelving and areas underneath equipment. The store received a half-point demerit for physical facilities needing to be better cleaned/maintained.

Rodie’s Parkway Restaurant

246 JW Luke Road, West Jefferson

Score: 94.5

The restaurant received a 1.5-point demerit for food improperly separated/protected. Store all raw meats according to final cook temperatures. Container of french toast mix with raw eggs was stored in bottom of prep cooler above deli meats. Corrected by instructing (PIC) to discard mix (reported from previous day) or rearrange deli meats and raw eggs. Raw sausage patties were stored above raw shrimp in four door cooler. Corrected by instructing PIC to move fish and shrimp above raw ground meats. The restaurant received a 1-point demerit for no Certified Food Protection Manager onsite during inspection. At least one manager present per shift shall be a certified food protection manager to prevent losing points during inspections. The restaurant received a 1-point demerit for insects and rodents present. Remove dried rodent droppings from a few areas of shelves in dry storage room. Once removed and areas cleaned, they should be watched closely for any new activity. Work with pest control operator as needed. Patch holes in screen for side door off of the dry storage room. Also weather stripping on this door is torn leaving large gaps at bottom of door. Replace stripping. The restaurant received a 1-point demerit for equipment, food and non-food contact surfaces needing to be better cleaned/maintained. Replace split gaskets on four door cooler and gasket is beginning to split on upright Arctic Air freezer. Significant amounts of frozen condensation noted inside of Yindu cooler, Arctic Air freezer, and three to four inches in sliding door chest freezer. Adjust loose hinge on one Yindu cooler door. Adjust sliding door freezer so that doors fully close without gaps. This may be missing a handle. Smooth rough edges on white cabinets/shelves in kitchen, where no longer easily cleanable. Replace burned out bulb inside of the Arctic freezer. The restaurant received a 1-point demerit for physical facilities needing to be better cleaned/maintained.

Rodie’s Parkway Restaurant received scores of 93 and 93 on two previous inspections.

Wendy’s

1380 Mt. Jefferson Road, West Jefferson

Score: 96.5

The restaurant received a 1.5-point demerit for food-contact surfaces needing to be better cleaned/sanitized. Tomato slicer was stored in a clean location with bits of dried tomato on it. Corrected by instructing PIC to wash, rinse, and sanitize. Use brushes or other means of thoroughly cleaning slicer. Probe for thermometer had been stored with dried chili on it. Corrected by instructing PIC to wash, rinse, and sanitize before storing this. One metal pan in clean utensil had sticker residue on it. Two pans in dish basket on clean side of dish machine still had food residue on them. Instructed PIC to remove all sticker residue and properly soak/load dishes to remove all food residue. The restaurant received a 1.5-point demerit for improper cooling time and temperatures. Cool cut tomatoes from room temperature (70 degrees) to 41 degrees or less within four hours. Tomatoes labeled as cut at 9 a.m. that morning still measured 43-44 degrees in walk-in cooler by 2:15-2:30 p.m. It was unclear whether these had been left at room temperature for an extended period before moved to walk-in. Other items in walk-in and those cut at same time (i.e. lettuce) were 37-41 degrees. The restaurant received a half-point demerit for improper cooling methods used. Cool cut tomatoes in walk-in by placing metal pans in walk-in in a way that will cool them to 41 degrees. Do not cover these tightly (keep them loosely covered or uncovered) until they reach 41 degrees or less. Corrected by removing tightly wrapped plastic on these for better air flow.

Wendy’s received scores of 97.5 and 96 on two previous inspections.
