CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — “Ain’t No Sunshine” by West Virginia-born-and-raised artist and Rock & Rock Hall of Famer Bill Withers has been added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry.

Withers was born in Slab Fork and raised in Beckley. He died in early 2020, leaving behind a legacy of songs that will be remembered for years to come.

ABBA, Blondie, and the Notorious B.I.G. enter the National Recording Registry

But one of his most popular songs is “Ain’t No Sunshine,” a song that lasted 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number three.

According to the registry, Withers’ song was released in 1971 as a single for Sussex. “Ain’t No Sunshine” would end up on “Just As I Am.”

Now that song has been immortalized in the National Recording Registry, one year after John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” was put in the registry.

The 2024 list of inductees range from disco and dance albums to new wave, Latin music, hip hop and more.
