Meet the Candidate: Paul Detch

“Since West Virginia’s three branches of government have come under Republican control and West Virginia became the Republican paradise, West Virginia’s population has lost 75,000 people. West Virginia is rated the most unhappy state in the Union, has the worst health, the worst infrastructure, the worst economy, ranks 50th in education attainment and 19% of the children are food insecure.”

With this statement, Paul Detch announced his candidacy for West Virginia’s House of Delegates in the 46th District, which includes southern Pocahontas and eastern Greenbrier counties.

Detch is quoted as saying, “The leading reason our young people are leaving the State is our Legislature. The Legislature is the voice and spirit of the people. This Legislature is tone-deaf to the problems we face. All this Legislature says is that ‘we don’t care that the schools are crappy, government employees and teachers are poorly paid and the economy sucks.’ It is Republican policies that are driving the best and brightest of our people out. If we want to halt our population drain and attract industry, we must be a place where people want to live and raise their families.”

Detch says, “West Virginians have a right to be angry. But their anger is misguided. Republicans love big corporations and the rich; our small family farms are threatened by big agribusiness; Our towns are being boarded up by big box stores; our small businesses are threatened by large chain corporations. Republicans want to keep us distracted from problems with fake social drama.

We have to be smart. We have to relearn how to compete in the modern world. We have to save our small towns and West Virginia values.”

Detch is a Lewisburg lawyer who has practiced for over 50 years in Pocahontas and Greenbrier counties. He taught medical law at WVSOM for 18 years and promises to promote quality, affordable healthcare.

Detch is running unopposed in the May primary but will be the Democratic candidate in the November election.
