The Post has got Palm Beach County covered. His name is Mike Diamond.

It's easy to forget sometimes how big Palm Beach County is.

A frame of reference I like to use is how long it takes to drive the length of the county — obeying the speed limit — on I-95. For the record, it's a good hour. And yes, that's non-rush hour and accident-free.

I mention this to point out that this is a big, urban county. It is run by a government with several thousand employees working in dozens of agencies handling billions in taxpayer dollars on a daily basis.

It's a lot to keep track of, and I want you to know that we've got one of our best reporters on it: Mike Diamond. He's a veteran reporter with a nose for news, and a passion for fighting for the little guy. That's helpful when you're covering a county this big, and discerning what is the most important topic that needs to be covered. Every day, Diamond and Post Community Editor Jim Coleman have to make these hard calls. And they're pretty good at it.

They know that we can't be everywhere and do everything. But they have a pretty good idea of where we should be, what we should be doing and when we should be doing it. As this recent email from Post subscriber Carol Watson shows:

It is time for me to acknowledge you. I remember reading your first articles about the Ag Reserve which now is several years ago? I’m a bit of a newspaper nerd.

Those articles were freelanced pieces I assume the Palm Beach Post accepted for a few years until you become an employee. Mike, my opinion is it's YOU who have single-handedly took it upon yourself as a mission to preserve our lands and especially the Ag Reserve. I have followed your journalism and it is exemplary. You have time and again stated the facts without opinionated nuances.

Even though I live up in Jupiter, we in the North County certainly believe in saving our environment, what little is left. ... I believe it was your pieces the Post published that inspired and motivated many people to write and call their reps that swung the vote the other way.

Thank you for that final long piece published the Sunday before the final vote that summed up the entire history of the Ag Reserve. It was perfect.

That's why we do this job.

Check out more of our staff's work from the past week below, and please continue to support local journalism.

Happy Easter! Tell a neighbor about us. We won't mind.
