There's something about the thrill of an Easter egg hunt that attracts folks of all ages to get in on the fun. And as we see in this fun little video shared by ABC on TikTok, the same can be said for animals—from bears to mongooses and beyond.
That's right! Resident animals at the Gelsenkirchen Zoo in Germany were treated to their very own Easter egg hunt on Wednesday, March 27th and their reactions were the perfect blend of curiosity and excitement. Take a look:
I love how we get such a variety of reactions. The bears waste no time and seemed to dive right in after quick scan, while the mongooses seem a little more suspicious, like, "Hmmm... this seems too good to be true." Meanwhile, the macaques are pretty much having the time of their lives, grabbing as many as they can while they indulge in this rare Easter treat.

Easter or not, I assume this fun little activity was a great break from the norm and a reason for these animals to get excited nonetheless. They certainly deserve it, that's for sure, and clearly enjoyed it. It's also just a great way to get their mental gears grinding, which is obviously important. A little change in routine can be a great thing! So I'd say this was a great idea.
Animal Enrichment at Zoos
Like all animals, zoo animals need as much mental and physical stimulation as they can get, which is why activities like this Easter egg hunt are so beneficial to them.
It's a great example of behavioral enrichment , as it allows these animals to use their minds in a fun, somewhat challenging way, while earning a little reward all the same. Plus, not only can it act as a total stress reliever, it gives these social animals something different to do with each other, too, which is awesome.
When animals behave positively in their environment, it's a good sign that their mental health is strong and that they're generally happy. And enrichment activities of all kinds can really play a major role in that happiness.
Anything from games to puzzles to subtle changes in their environment can go a long way, and you certainly don't need me to tell you that the animals absolutely love it.
They're typically less aggressive, less scared, and generally at ease in their environment when they're engaging in these activities. It's basically a way for these animals to be themselves—to feel more at home and natural—while being kept safely in captivity.
While there are countless ways to add enrichment to the lives of these animals, the most important thing to keep in mind is making it meaningful. Every animal is different as well, so catering to their specific needs is key.
At the end of the day, it's such a huge part of keeping these animals mentally stimulated, happy and generally thriving in their habitats. And if you're like me, I want to see these animals living their best life as often as they can!
