Wolf Dogs are huge, and they need to be kept in very specific conditions. More reactive than a typical dog, they need a much calmer environment with a lot of room to run and a lot of enrichment. Otherwise, they'll start to get bored and cagey, and that is bad for everyone involved.

On Thursday, March 21st, one dog mom posted about how her Wolf Dog was getting along with her Belgian Shepherd puppy. They're bonding in the funniest possible way:

I love both of these pups from @abianthewilds. They're so cute!

When you get into bigger breeds, they're much more likely to make ungodly amounts of noise. Breeds like Huskies, Samoyeds, and German Shepherds are notorious howlers from an early age - but what about actual wolves ? It turns out that Wolf Dog breeds, which are usually mixed with large breed dogs, howl just as much!

According to his mom, he's about 90 pounds, and he can be found howling the day away often. His newest, youngest puppy sibling is learning that the hard way - soon enough, all of them will be howling together. That's a harsh reality of having a dog, wolf or not, that howls: once one does it, everyone will do it.

Wolf Dogs need a lot of enrichment every single day: they have much stronger wild instincts than other dogs. Without enough enrichment, they'll turn aggressive and even dangerous - and when you have 8 dogs like this family does, that can be a very scary thought.

What Breeds Work Best with Wolf Dogs?

Wolf Dogs are not a good choice for most households, but if you've decided to have one, you need to be very careful about the kind of home environment you provide for them. A Wolf Dog of any kind should have a large outdoor enclosure (where they might even sleep), a special diet that was decided with a veterinarian, and a calm home without screaming kids or other loud animals.

Some of the best dogs to keep with a wolf breed include:

  1. Huskies
  2. Mastiffs
  3. Malamutes
  4. Belgian or German Shepherds

Unfortunately, having another dog with your Wolf Dog will always be a risk. They can be finnicky, and if something sets them off, they can injure or even kill other animals in your home. Smaller dogs and cats are also not recommended: some claim that, because of a Wolf Dog's elevated prey drive, they're more likely to attack smaller pets.

Just like with getting any dog, anyone interested in a wolf breed should do tons of research before committing. It seems like Abi has found a great match: I can't wait to see how they grow together!
