Muscogee County School District urges community support for E-SPLOST renewal campaign

COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL )— Wednesday afternoon, the Muscogee County School District (MCSD) held a community forum to discuss the 2024 Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST) renewal campaign.

The E-SPLOST is a local one-cent sales tax to support the education capital expenses and day-to-day operational needs of the district. The funding is used to maintain aging facilities, upgrade HVAC systems, purchase new buses and construct new buildings.

Some of the most notable E-SPLOST projects are the Columbus Museum renovations, Otis Spencer Stadium construction and Jordan Vocational High School upgrades.

According to Dr. Travis Anderson, chief operations officer for MCSD, funding is vital to support the growth of students and the community.

“We are not able to provide for our capital expenses without a E-SPLOST. We’re excited that our community has been able to support this for so many years. And we hope that they will vote to extend the existing campaign,” said Dr. Anderson.

E-SPLOST renewal will be on the ballot in the May 21 primaries. If renewed, the tax will last five more years , or until 290 million dollars are collected. The Muscogee County School District will host another community forum March 26, at 6 p.m. at Aaron Cohn Middle School.
