RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Anyone with a scheduled appointment with the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles will now have to confirm it before showing up.

On Wednesday, NCDMV announced they will send customers text and email reminders asking for confirmation for their appointments.

They said the effort will combat folks not showing up for their scheduled appointments at drivers license offices.

“This confirmation process is necessary to address the high no-show rate for appointments we have been experiencing in our driver license offices,” said DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

According to the NCDMV, 33.5 percent of appointments in February were no-shows.

With this in consideration, their goal is to shorten months-long wait times.

For example, as of Monday, some of the earliest appointments on the NCDMV’s scheduling service were not until June.

How will it work?

When customers reserve an appointment , the NCDMV says they will receive a test message and email with a confirmation link.

If that link is not clicked within 15 minutes, they said the appointment will be canceled.

Once customers confirm, officials said they will receive a text and email notification letting them know the confirmation was a success.

Customers will later receive a reminder four days before the appointment, which will contain another confirmation link, according to the NCDMV.

They said this link will be active for 24 hours, and will generate another text and email notification once confirmed.

No confirmation link will be sent for appointments booked less than four days out, according to the NCDMV.

“Folks are used to having to confirm their medical and other appointments in this way,” said Commissioner Goodwin, “so we’re applying this standard from the private sector to our business model and expecting good results and increased appointment availability.”
