Senior Michelle Merida said at the beginning of track season that she was going to break the school record in the two-mile run. Coming off a bad strain in cross country where she hadn’t performed as well as she did in previous years, it seemed unlikely that her hope for the two-mile record would become reality.

“I wasn’t able to build up my endurance as much as I wanted to, but my injury definitely helped me to not overwork myself and I have learned to take warm-ups, cool downs and stretches way more seriously,” Merida said.

At Lake Placid last week, she shattered the school record by more than 10 seconds, with a time of 14:13.19. That happened shortly after she finished third in the 1600-meter race and her confidence was low. It was raining and windy and she was battling some stomach issues too.

“I really think I could do better in the future,” said Merida.

The DeSoto softball team slugged its way to two more wins to raise its record to 7-2. The Bulldogs beat Southeast 16-1, then clubbed Bayshore, 20-5. Tuesday, they will host Moore Haven and on Thursday they travel to Hardee. The Wildcats gave the Bulldogs their first loss of the season, 4-1, and currently both teams are sporting 7-2 records.

The baseball team is still struggling offensively and dropped two more games last week to fall to 0-9 on the season. The Bulldogs lost to Cypress Lake 9-2, and were outscored at Sebring, 10-1. It looks like another tough week as they host Hardee (7-4) Tuesday and travel to Mulberry (8-5) on Thursday.

The boys tennis team split their two matches last week beating Avon Park 5-2 for its second win. Thursday the Bulldogs were shut out by Hardee, 7-0, for their sixth loss of the season. They will be home Thursday against Port Charlotte.

The girls tennis team also split its two matches, beating Avon Park 5-2, then losing a close match, 4-3, to Hardee. It was just the Bulldogs’ second loss of the season against six wins. They will host Charlotte on Tuesday and are at home Thursday to welcome Port Charlotte.
