Kyrie Irving is ready to talk to the Nets about a contract extension, but no discussions have taken place yet, writes Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report.
Irving is eligible for a veteran extension that would pay him up to about $200MM over four years. A report last week indicated that a shorter deal with Brooklyn might be more realistic.
“Around Kyrie and staying with the Nets? I have reached out to the Nets regarding this,” said his agent, Shetellia Irving. “We have had no significant conversations to date. The desire is to make Brooklyn home, with the right type of extension, which means the ball is in the Nets’ court to communicate now if their desire is the same.”
Irving will be an unrestricted free agent this summer if the two sides can’t agree on an extension. He had the opportunity to enter free agency last offseason by turning down his $36.5MM player option, but there was said to be little interest in him around the league following a season in which his playing time was limited because of his refusal to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The situation may be different if Irving hits the free agent market this year. He has been on his best behavior since an early-season suspension for promoting an antisemitic film and has helped the Nets climb into contention for the top seed in the East.
Irving is averaging 26.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists through 35 games and is the leader among Eastern Conference guards in the latest round of All-Star voting.

Nets should have the leverage to build some language into the contract about escalating $$ based on games played and being able to void the contract under certain conditions. No reason not to keep an All-Star PG around who your superstar player loves unless you can actually get someone else that’s anywhere close to as good.

No more mega contract or long contract for Kyrie.
On his current 4 yr contract, he has done nothing to earn his contract and he missed majority of his games.
He doesn’t deserve a contract more than 1 year. First season he sat out because Durant couldn’t play, second season he took off about 20 games to celebrate his birthday and to “reflect” on the Capitol riots, season 3 he sat out due to covid vacine, this season he was already suspended 8 games for doing something stupid. He has the talent but not the mind to play professional sports

He played his first year without Durant then got a shoulder injury ending his season. Second season he missed lots of games because he wasn’t right mentally. Third season he didn’t sit out nba forced him to sit out. Fourth season nothing has happened he has done everything to earn that 4 year 200 million dollar deal he’s been a great leader carrying the load when Durant is out. Also if you’re saying he shouldn’t get a contract because he misses games look at Kawhi, Embiid, AD and Zion etc all getting payed max contracts long term and miss games.
@styles they said he was able to play through the shoulder injury and he elected not to play. Everytime he fell in season 1 he acted like he just got hit by a train because he didnt want to play. Dont be naive
He chose to not get vaccinated so it was his choice to sit out. Just like it would be your choice to not drive a car or put on pants or various other things that are prerequisites to going to work.
Embiid has not missed nearly as many games as the others. I’d argue other than Embiid none of them deserve max contracts either. But at least they have been positive presences on the roster. Irving has not had one entire season without behavioral drama in like 8 years.
Maybe don’t use AD in this example? You know… since it’s gone pretty badly. Zion also doesn’t deserve to be in there since he’s young (and honestly the Pelicans had little options but to give it to him). Kyrie is… a problem. A talented one, but giving him a max contract for a small sample of good is a bad idea. He can’t help but be an absolute moron.

Just pay the man. Meet him half way 3 years $150. 3rd year team option. The next two Years is Brooklyn championship window and there’s no PG’S worth taking in free agency in 2023 unless they want the likes of Westbrook, D’Angelo Russell or Pat Bev.

They’ve already dug themselves in a hole. To extend Kyrie would extend that hole. Sure, maybe the nets would be able to make it work if this were about any other 2 players. Where you have reasonable assurances from both players that they will honor contracts and try and be models to get other players to come to the nets on the minimum ( because that’s mostly all that super teams can afford).
But being an exec or owner, would you take assurances from those two?
Durant you’d take assurances from, Kyrie no. Kyrie doesn’t deserve a single shred of trust from anyone until he can prove he knows how to be an adult.
Next year is Brooklyns championship window, this year is over. The Nets are screwed whether they sign Kyrie or not. It’s been an abysmal failure and it’s almost fully Kyrie’s fault.
The only deal that would make sense for the Nets is a 1 + 1 (team option) f0r $30M py.
Any Kyrie contract needs an exit plan for the team.

Only thing that offer would do is piss Irving off.. You have no other options.. And to be quite honest, If it wasn’t for Irving, the Brooklyn nets wouldn’t even be relevant. He brought Kd to town, he keeps the tabloids discussing Brooklyn(all publicity is good publicity lol) and they’ve made the playoffs every year. Without him joining the team they would’ve been the Houston rockets of the east

Everything pisses off Kyrie, he’s a fragile person. Does it really matter if it’s money? He’ll find a different reason to be mad or “hurt” or group to lash out at.
The Nets are playing well. Things have been quiet for a month or two with Kyrie. Now isn’t the time to make your agent go public and put the Nets on the spot. Especially after the horrible controversy he just caused. This dude really just doesn’t get it.

His agent is his stepmother… you can’t try and use logic with Kyrie.
As long as he continues to let his play do the talking, he’ll probably get two years + a player option year to match KD’s contract time remaining.
