PHOENIX – Authorities said a car going over 125 mph crashed and triggered an hourslong shutdown of a Phoenix-area freeway Wednesday morning.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a 19-year-old man faced counts including criminal speed, DUI and endangerment for a wreck on westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway near the Tempe-Phoenix border.

Troopers were called about the speeding car around 5:40 a.m., DPS said.

Shortly after, the Honda Accord hit three vehicles then crashed into the median wall and rolled over near State Route 143. The roadway was shut down at Van Buren Street, DPS said.

The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening and will be booked into jail after his release, DPS said.

One of the others drivers suffered minor injuries, DPS said.

The roadway reopened around 9 a.m.
