This is at least the fifth death of an incarcerated person in Maine so far in 2022.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, a person being held at the Cumberland County Jail died at the facility Sunday. On Monday morning, Sheriff Kevin Joyce identified the person who died as James Mannion, 30, of Portland. Just before 6 a.m., a corrections officer found Mannion unresponsive in his cell.The officer, jail medical staff and Portland first responders were unable to revive Mannion, according to the sherriff's office. According to Sheriff Joyce, Mannion was booked into the Cumberland County Jail in December by the Portland Police Department for drug possession charges, violations of conditions of release, and failure to appear.The Chief Medical Examiner's Office will now work to determine the cause and manner of death. Mannion's death represents at least the ninth death in Maine jail or prison so far this year.
