At some stations, prices are approaching $5 per gallon.According to Gas Buddy, the cheapest gas in Maine on Tuesday was $4.25 at a station in Veazie. According to AAA on Monday, Maine had the ninth-largest weekly increase in the country, with prices rising 19 cents over the previous week. By Wednesday, the weekly gap had grown to 25 cents. New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut were also in the top 10 for largest increases.“The high cost of oil, the key ingredient in gasoline, is driving these high pump prices for consumers,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “Even the annual seasonal demand dip for gasoline during the lull between spring break and Memorial Day, which would normally help lower prices, is having no effect this year.”A year ago on this date, the average in Maine was $2.98.
