Klopp “Couldn’t Be Happier” After 5-0 Victory

Liverpool’s 5-0 beatdown of Manchester United this evening elicited elation from every corner of the Liverpool fanbase, but that joy didn’t stop at the supporters. Manager Jürgen Klopp was equally thrilled after the win.

“5-0, I couldn’t be happier, it is exceptional. Absolutely outstanding,” Klopp told Sky Sports after the match.

“I have a few defeats in my mind which was not necessary, but we won today so we drink beer on the way home!”

While Klopp knows he has an exceptional squad and expects them to win every time they take the pitch, he never could have foreseen such a lopsided victory.

“What can I say? Did I expect that? No. What we did in the last third was insane. Pressing high, winning balls, scored wonderful goals.”

Despite a 4-0 lead going into the break, the manager expected more from his team to start the second half, and he told them so. In the end, the game was so clearly out of reach after just one more goal that the Reds were able to cruise pretty comfortably until the final whistle blew.

“I told them at half-time to play better. We started incredibly well and stopped playing football. We controlled the game after the fifth, it was not about scoring more, just trying to get out without more injuries.”

A 5-0 scoreline in a match between Liverpool and Manchester United is something that does not happen often, and the historic nature of the win was not lost on the German manager.

“The result is insane, I asked if there was one like this in history and if there isn’t then it will take a while. The players put a nice piece in the book.”

Despite the huge win, Klopp didn’t want to go overboard with the celebrations, especially given the current state of the opposition means a five-goal margin of victory doesn’t carry the same weight that it would have when United was at their best.

“It is special but we don’t celebrate like crazy, we have respect for the opponents. We were lucky in some moments, United are not in their best moment.”
