PHOENIX – Tempe is planning to add bike lanes on Scottsdale Road in the northern part of the city.

The project is part of the East Valley suburb’s “20-minute city” plan to reduce reliance on motor vehicles.

The goal is to create a system in which residents can conveniently walk, bike or ride public transit for any basic non-work transportation.

The Scottsdale Road bike lanes would run from Curry Road to the city border with Scottsdale at Continental Drive.

“Once completed, this project will link existing bike lanes in the cities of Tempe and Scottsdale, allowing users to travel easily between cities along Scottsdale Road,” a Tempe press release says.

The plan calls for the bike lanes to be added without reducing the current number of traffic lanes or landscaped medians.

Virtual public meetings about the project are set for Nov. 3 at noon and Nov. 6 at 9 a.m.

The meetings will be archived online, and the city will take online input about the plan Nov. 3-17. Additional meetings will be scheduled for the spring of 2022.

Construction is expected to start in early 2023.

Grants of about $1.5 million from the Maricopa Association of Governments will pay for the project.
