Future Apple iPad Pros to feature LTPO OLED displays
Apple released its first device with a mini LED display this year, a technology that it is also expected to bring to the upcoming MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16. The release of the mini LED-backed iPad Pro 12.9 had its problems though, principally because of its advanced display. Consequently, there have been plenty of rumours that Apple will switch to OLED panels for future iPads, including an 11-inch model.
According to The Elec, LG Display has started developing a 12.9-inch LTPO OLED panel for the iPad Pro 12.9. Reputedly, mass production will start by the end of 2023 at the earliest, providing that there are no delays. Hence, Apple is not expected to unveil an iPad Pro 12.9 with an LTPO OLED panel before 2024. The Elec notes that an 11-inch LTPO OLED panel is in development as well, albeit produced by Samsung Display.
The latter will also have a hand in developing LTPO OLED panels for the iPad Pro 12.9. Presumably, these panels will be capable of operating at multiple refresh rates, and perhaps as low as 1 Hz or 10 Hz. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max already do this to minimise power consumption, with the pair varying their refresh rates between 10 Hz and 120 Hz.
