PHOENIX – A poll of Arizonans showed more than half oppose Gov. Doug Ducey’s ban on mask mandates in schools and withholding funds from districts that have mask requirements.

Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights released its findings Tuesday. Of the 1,000 surveyed, 57% disagreed with Ducey’s decision to withhold funding from school districts that have mask mandates. Of that number, 44% strongly opposed.

The poll also found 51% to 35% were against prohibiting schools from requiring children to wear masks.

The poll was conducted Sept. 7-12. Participants were 18 and older.

The poll also found that 58% believed schools should make the decision whether to require masks, while 42% felt parents should be the ones to determine mask-wearing for their children.

Aside from the mask issue, Ducey’s overall approval rating on his COVID-19 direction went up to 48%, a turnaround from the previous poll in July when he had only 35%.

“September numbers have rebounded … [with] almost half of residents saying they approve of Ducey’s effort to combat the coronavirus,” OH Predictive Insights chief of research Mike Noble told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Breaking down the poll participants, 512 women and 488 men shared their opinions. Most were from Maricopa County (610) and between 18 and 54 years old (589).

The poll has a margin of error of 3.1%.
