The Daily Chop: Thursday washout, rotation plans and more

The Atlanta Braves’ homestand ended in a washout Thursday as the series finale was postponed due to unplayable conditions at Truist Park. The Braves and Rockies played through a persistent rain storm Wednesday night and the field soaked up a lot of water. That presents a pretty big scheduling problem for Major League Baseball as Atlanta and Colorado don’t have another mutual off day between them. That means that Thursday’s game is likely to be played on October 4 which would be the day after the 2021 regular season is scheduled to end. The game will likely only be played if it has a direct bearing on the NL East or Wild Card standings.

The Braves will now head out west for an 11-game, 10-day trip that will take them to San Francisco, Arizona and San Diego. Brian Snitker said Thursday that the team will push Ian Anderson to Friday’s series opener against the Giants. Charlie Morton and Max Fried will follow on Saturday and Sunday.

• Prior to Thursday’s cancellation, the Braves placed right-hander Luke Jackson on the paternity list and reinstated reliever Chris Martin from the injured list. Martin has been out since September 2 with what was called forearm inflammation. He made one rehab appearance with Gwinnett before being activated.

• The San Diego Padres placed left-hander Blake Snell on the 10-day injured list with a left adductor strain and signed Vince Velasquez to a minor league contract. Velasquez was released by the Phillies earlier this week and is expected to join the Padres’ rotation over the weekend.
• It leaked a little earlier this week but Major League Baseball announced Thursday that the Seattle Mariners will host the 2023 All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park. Seattle last hosted the event in 2001.
