Group seeking to block health care worker COVID-19 vaccine mandate rallies in Portland
A group of Mainers seeking to block the state's COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health care workers held a demonstration Wednesday in Portland.
The Alliance Against Healthcare Mandates has sued the Mills administration over the mandate.
People at the rally said they want the choice on whether to be vaccinated, and some said they are not against the vaccine itself.
"We are here to take a stand and show opposition to the mandate. We are not anti-anything except for the mandate. We fully support people's right to choose and we are asking for the right to choose," Alliance Against Healthcare Mandates founder Emily Nixon said.
Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey has said the mandate is based on a determination by public health officials that the vaccine is necessary to limit the spread of COVID-19 in health care facilities.
Maine health care workers are already required to take other vaccines as part of their employment.
Frey said he is confident the mandate will be upheld in courts.
The state is facing another lawsuit regarding the vaccine mandate
