PHI 4, MIA 3; Marlins drop series finale to the Phillies in extras

The Miami Marlins were unable to pick up their third sweep of the season as they lost in extra innings Sunday afternoon to the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-3.

The Marlins had right-handed pitcher Elieser Hernandez on the mound for the series finale versus the Phillies. Hernandez had a good outing that was spoiled by a rough fourth inning. Hernandez pitched five innings allowing three hits, three runs, one walk and six strikeouts.

All three hits and runs Hernandez gave up were in the fourth inning, including home runs from Bryce Harper and Freddy Galvis.

Hernandez was relieved by right-handed pitcher Zach Thompson. Thompson only threw one inning but held the Phillies scoreless even after he gave up a leadoff double to J.T. Realmuto. He got Harper to bunt out and both Andrew McCutchen and Didi Gregorius grounded out to end the inning.

Thompson was relieved by right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass. He allowed one hit but no runs to cross.

Bass was replaced in the top of the eighth with Anthony Bender. The 26-year-old relief pitcher had a quick 1-2-3 eighth inning which included a strikeout to J.T. Realmuto. He benefited from a diving catch by Isan Díaz that robbed Harper out of a hit.

Bender came back out for the ninth inning but struggled as he control started to get away from him. He walked two batters in the inning but was able to turn a double play. Left-handed pitcher Steven Okert completed the frame from there.

In the 10th inning, Dylan Floro got the first two batters out before Odubel Herrera hit a RBI single to RF that scored Freddy Galvis from second.

Addressing the media postgame, manager Don Mattingly disclosed that Miguel Rojas (left trapezius soreness) and Jorge Alfaro (right knee soreness) are dealing with day-to-day injuries. Otherwise, both veterans could’ve been used in critical moments during the bottom of the 10th—instead, their teammates came up empty.

It was an awful day at the plate for the Marlins offense as they only had two hits in the entire game, but outfielder Bryan De La Cruz was once again a bright spot. De La Cruz went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, two RBI and a hit by pitch.

Catcher Alex Jackson contributed the only other hit for the Fish as he got a broken bat single into shallow right field.

In 32 at-bats, Miami players combined for a .062 batting average while striking out at a 40.6% clip in a game that the Phillies emptied out their bullpen.

What’s next?

The Marlins will have a day off before they host the New York Mets for a three-game series starting Tuesday night. Right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera will be on the mound for the third start of his MLB career.

The consensus Top 100 prospect hasn’t looked great in his first two starts with the Marlins but there is still a ton of buzz around the 23-year-old pitcher. Previously, Cabrera has thrown 10 ¹⁄₃ innings allowing eleven hits, six runs, three walks and four strikeouts, leaning very heavily on his secondary pitches.

The Mets will have right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco on the mound for the series opener. Carrasco’s last start was against the Marlins earlier this week, when he went pitched 5 ¹⁄₃ innings allowing four hits, three runs, one walk and five strikeout. First pitch is at 6:40 pm EST on FS1.
