A pair of tropical storms showed no signs of weakening Wednesday.

Grace became a hurricane as it barreled toward Mexico, and Tropical Storm Henri was poised to become a hurricane by Friday on its trek northward in the Atlantic, all while the remnants of Tropical Depression Fred drenched parts of the East Coast.

Several tornadoes were reported Tuesday, including in Edgefield County, South Carolina, and Iredell County, North Carolina, about 50 miles north of Charlotte. The storm briefly knocked out power in some areas and at least one man was killed Monday in Florida when he lost control of his car while driving through floodwater, The News Herald of Panama City, Florida, reported.

Grace, which brought heavy rains to Haiti days after the country was hit by an earthquake, was expected to move west away from the Cayman Islands on Wednesday toward the Yucatán Peninsula, where it was expected to make landfall early Thursday.

Out in the Atlantic Ocean, Henri’s winds strengthened Tuesday to reach 65 mph. As of Wednesday morning, the storm was about 190 miles southwest of Bermuda, where a tropical storm watch that had been in effect Tuesday was lifted. The storm was moving west at 8 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. The center warned that Henri could still produce hazardous rip currents.
