This summer, the Columbus Metropolitan Library is offering a calendar of enriching events along with a 9-week Summer Reading Challenge. When I was a kid, some of my favorite days of summer break were those spent competing in my local library’s summer reading challenge.

I would search for the thickest books on the shelves (my library cared about who could read the most pages) and devour them one by one, hoping to earn whatever the best prize was that year. It kept my mind sharp during the summer months, and the CML is hoping to do the same for its young residents.

“This pandemic has deeply impacted our young minds and their ability to learn,” said CML Public Services Director Kathy Shahbodaghi.
“Helping them get back on track starts with books and reading. This is especially critical during the out-of-school months.”

Those who participate in the reading challenge will be entered in raffle drawings for tons of cool prizes, one of which is a children’s bicycle. The CML is also offering a variety of fun events - both virtual and in-person - for kids of all ages, perfect for parents looking for something to keep their little ones busy during the summer months.

You can download the READsquared application to join the library’s reading program and gain access to a slew of book recommendations separated by age group.

Whether your child is looking to exercise their body or their minds (or both), there are activities to cater to their needs. Some of the program highlights include Kahoot Family Trivia, Fly Girl Dance with Lisa Marie, Mad Science: Water, Water Everywhere, and Drawing Animals with Numbers and Letters with Steve Harpster.

The events take place both virtually and at some of the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s branches. The Summer Reading Challenge ends on Saturday, July 31st. You can click here to register for any of the listed events, plus a ton more!
