As the summer season for tourists goes into full swing at Broadway at the Beach, visitors have more food options than ever, and one of the busiest thus far is the Grumpy Monk. Despite the current labor shortage in Myrtle Beach, Grumpy Monk is still putting out a good portion of their main menu and doing their best to ensure the flux of post-COVID vacationers get a seat.

Open since 2018, The Grumpy Monk is one of the newer restaurants located at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Grumpy Monk prides itself on a massive beer selection and iconic chicken and seafood entrees, like the big kid chicken fingers, or the smothered chicken, two fresh grilled and blackened chicken breasts smothered in cheddar cheese, sauteed peppers, mushrooms, and onions.

The Honey Pecan Chicken blends sweet and savory like no other, featuring two boneless chicken breasts encrusted in pecan breading, fried, and drizzled in honey. Blending bold and savory, the Greek Chicken comes with roasted red peppers, black olives, feta cheese, spinach, tomatoes, and a special house Greek dressing.

The crab stuffed flounder is a unique seafood highlight, featuring fresh Atlantic flounder stuffed with blue lump crab and topped with a herbaceous cream sauce. For a more vigorous seafood sampler, the Calabash Seafood Platter at Grumpy Monk comes with battered and fried shrimp and flounder.

Handhelds offer up a number of staple Americana sandwiches to diners, like the French Dipper with shaved angus ribeye, Swiss, sauteed onions, and au jus, or the Reuben with all the corned beef and sauerkraut goodness one comes to expect of the iconic sandwich. The California BLT Grilled Cheese features avocado, bacon, lettuce, ranch, tomato, and mozzarella, while the Old Macdonald Club is a double-decker with turkey, ham, bacon, American cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onion.

The Atlantic Flounder sandwich comes blackened or fried with tartar sauce, lettuce, and tomatoes, while the Monk Buffalo features a grilled or fried chicken breast tossed in buffalo sauce with provolone, lettuce, onion, and tomato. The NOLA is a succulent creation featuring amber ale marinated pork, provolone, sauteed onions and peppers, all topped with a house creole sweet sauce.

Wraps are all around a good option at Grumpy Monk’s as well. The portobello mushroom wrap comes with roasted red peppers, avocado, mixed greens, and balsamic vinaigrette, while the turkey wrap features Swiss cheese and a house made pesto mayo. The Cluck Oink Ranch is a unique dish highlighting fried chicken, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and house made ranch.

There are a good variety of flavors to choose from when it comes to Grumpy Monk burgers. The Red White and Blue is the standard cheeseburger, the Rodeo the barbecue burger, the Bacon Mushroom Swiss pretty much self-explanatory. The Famous Monk burger features pepper jack cheese, applewood bacon, and peanut butter alongside the staple veggies, while the Jack Sparrow comes with Caribbean seasoning, pepper jack, mango chutney, and banana peppers for a unique kick.

The Chipotle Black Bean Burger is Grumpy Monk’s vegetarian burger option with lettuce, tomato, onion, and a spicy aioli. The American Pride offers up a burger and wing combo, featuring the Red White and Blue burger alongside five famous monk wings in choice of sauce.

The famous monk wings can be found in the appetizers and come in a little over a dozen flavors, each dry rubbed, mesquite smoked, then fried. Choices include plain, hot, medium, hot parmesan, sweet bourbon hot, mango habanero, hot-yaki, Monk fire, garlic parmesan, tsunami, Thai honey butter, teriyaki, BBQ, lemon pepper, maple chipotle BBQ, double house rub, hot lemon pepper, or old bay.

There is a starter for just about everyone at Grumpy Monk. For the dip-lovers, the Buffalo chicken dip may be meatless but the flavor is on point, while the crab dip is about as spicy and features fresh blue lump crab. For fried veggie fans, the Southern pickles are the ideal fried pickle chips, and the fried green tomatoes come served with house sweet and spicy sauces.

The Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah Shrimp are the Grumpy Monk’s take on boom boom shrimp, featuring a very balanced sweet and spicy house sauce, while the Na-Na Nachos offer up a stacked take on loaded nachos. Though the name may be off-putting at best, the Monk Turds are actually one of the more unique appetizers on the menu, featuring jalapenos, cream cheese, and bacon fried in panko.

The Build Your Own Salad at Grumpy Monk is a highlight too, featuring an incredible number of options, though any protein is a minimum four dollars extra. For those looking for a straight green salad or a good diet option, the salad is always a solid choice.
