The College of Humanities & Social Sciences host “Let’s Talk About It” Summer Series

HOUSTON, TX — The College of Humanities & Social Sciences of the University of Houston Downtown will be hosting the virtual “Let’s Talk About It” summer series on June 17, July 8, and July 29.

Previously, last summer, Crystal Guillory in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences joined forces with the Center for Community Engagement & Service Learning (CCESL) to hold the “Let’s Talk About It” series. This event included nine weeks of discussion surrounding topics of police reform and reparations.

“Our first conversation discussed the backlash to the #BlackLivesMatter protests surrounding the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others, which culminated into galvanizing African-Americans to participating in their right to vote to help elect our first African-American and Indian-American Vice President of the United States,” said Guillory, Assistant Dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences.

In this three-event summer series, CHSS joined with co-sponsors: W.I. Dykes Library, CCESL and the Cultural Enrichment Center.

The first conversation on June 17 will talk about “Voter Suppression” to honor Juneteenth with UHD faculty members Dr. William “Bill” Flores. Dr. Jonathan Chism, Assistant Professor of History and Fellow of the Center for Critical Race Studies, will facilitate the dialogue on topics surrounding voter suppression that happen in Texas, and there will be Q&A.

As this event is not a webinar, participants are encouraged to join the conversation. Participants also are invited to watch the voter suppression videos from ABC on https://youtu.be/gSmamGdoGX4 to learn the background of the issue.

“We will focus on Texas, which has a 150-year history of voter suppression. We will discuss Texas SB7 legislation that has not been passed as well as the For the People (HR 1) Bill in Congress and the impact of these very different bills and what the UHD community can do to increase voter registration and turnout,” said Flores, Former UHD President and Professor of Political Science and Nonprofit Management.
