If You Want the Freshest Fried Seafood in Bellingham, Washington, Go Where the Fishermen Are

Even though it lies at the opposite corner of the country from us, we have visited Bellingham, Washington, many times, and it's on the shortlist for our future travels. There is much to see and do there and wonderful people and food. But no matter how much or little time we have to spend there, a stop for lunch at the Web Locker is always on the list.

The Web Locker is located in Squalcom Harbor on Coho Way on the road out to Zuanich Point Park. To access it, you'll need to get down to Roeder Avenue along the waterfront from one of the few roads that head down the hill off of Eldridge Avenue. We usually get there from Seaview Avenue for a walk along Little Squalicum Beach before lunch. But what about a walk after lunch, you ask? We'll get to that in a minute.

The Web Locker in Bellingham, Washington, is very much not a tourist place. If you want that, head down to Fairhaven. We are always the few strangers in the business as everyone always seems to know everyone else. They are open from 7 am to 3 pm every day except Sunday when they open at 8 am. If you get there early or late, you are likely to run into a crowd of fisherman before or after their catch.

They have a very nice breakfast menu, and I'm sure the food is excellent, well prepared, and hearty. But it is lunch that draws us there. One time I actually ordered a hamburger, which was perfect. But I can get a good burger anywhere. When I go to the Web Locker in Bellingham, Washington, it's for one of the holy trinity, Fried Shrimp, Fried Oyster, or Fried Fish. And I'm not above ordering all three in one of their Seafood Baskets. Our son-in-law is a big fan of the fried clams, and he is a very picky eater.

The seafood baskets come fresh and hot with french fries, slaw, and the usual sauces. As much as I love a good cocktail sauce, I ate the whole basket of fried oysters once with nothing on them. You could still taste the saltwater. The shrimp are always cooked to perfection, and the fish hot and flaky. If you are not a seafood lover, they have an extensive menu of burgers and sandwiches.

Okay, we've devoured that massive portion of fried food, and it's time for another walk. There is a beautiful one-mile walk out to the park and back that we take each time. As a photographer, this walk usually takes me about an hour. First, you walk along the inside portion of the harbor where yachts and sailboats reside along with the smaller fishing boats. The water is usually dead calm which makes for some nice shots. If you are lucky (luckier than me), you can get a view of Mt Baker in the distance behind the boats.

Then you continue along the harbor in Zuanich Point Park, a pleasant grassy area with views of Hotel Bellwether across the way. Look for a tall ship that sometimes docks there. The park ends at the Fisherman's Memorial. Then you walk across parking lots that border the industrial fishing part of the development, where tons of fishing equipment, huge piles of nets and even a web locker or two can be seen. The walk finishes along the outside portion of the harbor where the big commercial fishing boats are docked.
