New York is the city that never sleeps. More than 8 million people live there. Plus, it is a popular tourist destination. It means you will never feel completely alone. However, there are still plenty of locations around the city you can visit on your own.

So if you are a solo traveler wishing to explore the Big Apple, or want to have a day off from socializing, here are some ideas on what to do in New York City!

Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the Met, is a must-see for both Newyorkers and tourists. After all, it is the largest museum in the United States, with around 2 million art pieces on a permanent display. Met's collection features Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art, the paintings by some of the best European artists, and so much more.

The sheer size of the Met makes it the perfect place to get lost and explore artwork from all around the globe. It will take you several days to see and experience each piece. However, if you are short on time, it is best to find the museum's map and create a tour that fits your interests. Plus, you will be going alone, so you won't be distracted.

    Go thrifting in Williamsburg

Overpriced clothes don't necessarily mean sophisticated and fashionable. Fans of vintage pieces know this well. The cheapest and most fun way to refresh your closet is to go thrifting, and Williamsburg is the perfect neighborhood for that. After all, it is the hippest part of New York City.

Williamsburg is full of thrift stores that offer various styles of clothes. These shops do sell pre-owned garments, but most of them are in excellent condition. Also, don't be surprised to find a brand new piece of clothing with the original tag still attached. Thrifting is a fun solo activity for anyone because you might discover your future favorite jacket or dress for a meager price.

    Explore the Shakespeare Garden

Central Park is humongous but still a bit crowded. It might be hard to find a secluded and relaxing place to sit down and unwind. Enter the Shakespeare Garden - the best-kept secret of this park. The garden opened its gates in 1913 and has been a favorite location for many Newyorkers since then.

Since this corner of Central Park is dedicated to Shakespeare, visitors will see the flowers he mentioned in his works. The overall landscape is a reference to England countryside. The garden is magical in spring, with the majority of flowers in full bloom, so don't miss out on the opportunity to go there and enjoy the atmosphere.

Enjoy the view at the One World Observatory

One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the United States. Standing on the site of the original World Trade Center, the structure is simply impressive. If you want to see the entire New York, head up to the 100th floor of the building. There you will find the One World Observatory that offers 360 views of the Big Apple.

You may hang around the observatory as long as you like, taking photos and enjoying the cityscape. The sky portal is a fun feature as well. The glass disk projects the streets of New York from the above in high definition, so it looks pretty realistic. Once you feel like you need something to eat or drink, there is a restaurant on the upper floors.

Read books at New York Public Library

New York Public Library is the place to be if you enjoy solitude. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the library is easily recognized thanks to the iconic architecture. It has been featured in many movies and TV shows set in New York, such as Sex and the City and Ghostbusters.

The interiors are equally breathtaking, with high ceilings and rows and rows of shelves filled with millions of books. There are plenty of hidden architectural details that have an interesting backstory too. Since the library is open for everyone, you can take a tour of the building, sit down with a book or a newspaper, and soak in the surroundings.
