CLEVELAND — The Case Western Reserve University held more commencement ceremonies and events, following the ceremonies for medicine and law on Freiberger Field on Sunday, May 16. The graduation festivities happened from Friday to Sunday, May 28–30, with more than 1,700 graduates attended the events.

Marc Morial, the speaker of Case Western Reserve convocation, told the graduates that there are three things they have to endure in this pandemic; the pandemic itself, economic issues and racial injustice, via a recorded video posted on Sunday morning.

The pandemic has been going on for 14 months and had taken about 575,000 lives and affected 32 million people in the U.S. On the economic front, there are 11 million people who become jobless, struggling to pay rent or even food. While on the race issue, the Black community still has to deal with systemic inequality.

Marc Morial, current President and CEO of the National Urban League, stated that this ‘trilogy of pandemics’ is not to give the citizen desperation, but rather a ‘trilogy of tomorrow’ that has already begun.

“We’ve seen health care workers give it their all,” the former New Orleans mayor explained. “We’ve seen biomedicine in record time create a pathway beyond this pandemic is yes, the human suffering and yes the human tragedy, but also the human will, the human ingenuity, the human power of our ability to work and transition past the difficulties of this pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Pamela B. Davis, a famous cystic fibrosis researcher who served as dean of the medical school from 2007 to 2020, was awarded the Frank and Dorothy Humel Hovorka Prize, the university’s highest distinction bestowed on a member of the faculty.
