Doughnuts are one of those foods that never really go out of style. It's a dessert that can be eaten as a breakfast food, and pretty much everybody loves them. Luckily for those of us in the northern San Diego area, there are plenty of good doughnut options here.

Whether you're on the hunt for good doughnuts along the coast or further inland, here are some of the best doughnut shops in the North San Diego County area -- including both classic options and more artisan-style shops.

5. Crispy's Donuts

For a classic doughnut shop located in San Marcos, you won't want to pass up Crispy's Donuts. Although it may look like an unassuming shop in a strip mall, Crispy's has some of the best doughnuts in the North San Diego County area.

The classics here are done right, but there are also some unique offerings. That includes a strawberry cronut made with fresh fruit and a cronut covered with Nutella, both of which are among the most popular items on the menu.

4. The Goods

Hours: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday

The Goods is an airy doughnut shop and cafe located in Carlsbad, California. This shop specializes in artisan doughnuts and unique flavors. For those with eating restrictions, The Goods also offers a number of gluten-free and vegan options.

Each doughnut is like a delicious piece of art, and there are many flavors to appease any palate. From Boston Creme donuts to Brigadeiro Truffle, The Goods probably has an option for even the pickiest doughnut connoisseur.

3. VG Donuts & Bakery

Hours: 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturady, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday

VG Donuts & Bakery is another doughnut shop located in a strip mall, but don't let that fool you. This place has some of the best doughnuts in the coastal North County area. It also happens to be walking distance from the beach, so you can eat your baked goods while looking out at the waves.

Beach aside, the doughnuts are the star of the show here. Doughnuts are baked twice a day, and there's a selection of cake donuts, classic donuts, cinnamon rolls, and buttermilk donuts. In addition to doughnuts, there are all kinds of other baked goods here -- from cookies to wedding cakes.

2. Parlor Doughnuts

Address: 331 N Cleveland St, Oceanside, CA 92054

Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday

A relatively new addition to the downtown Oceanside area, Parlor Doughnuts is a hip joint that specializes in unique donut and cronut flavors. Although the shop itself is small, it's dog-friendly and has a fairly spacious outdoor seating area.

As far as the doughnuts, expect unusual flavors such as Campfire, churro, or Bourbon Caramel. There's even a keto-friendly bacon maple doughnut, and pretty much every option has an excellent texture and flavor. (On a side note, the doughnuts looks great and are practically meant to be Instagrammed.)

1. Peterson's Donut Corner

Address: 903 S Escondido Blvd, Escondido, CA 92025

Hours: Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Peterson's Donut Corner (no relation to the writer) is an institution in Escondido, California, but fans from all across the county venture out to buy their freshly baked goods. It's a small shop with an often crowded parking lot and line, but it's worth the wait.

The classics here -- like a glazed or old-fashioned doughnut -- are top-notch. The bacon maple bar and cinnamon rolls are also fan favorites. Best of all, Peterson's is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means you can fulfill your donut craving literally anytime.
