It's unclear when and where the first hamburgers were created, but Wisconsinites will tell you it was here, in Seymour, in 1885. Whether or not that's true, Wisconsin has a top-notch burger legacy to defend. Blue-collar diner burgers are the norm, but fancy-pants patties are also available.

Here are the best burger restaurants in Wisconsin:

    Kopps, Wisconsin

This is a Wisconsin comfort food. Food snobs may disapprove of this burger being at the top of the list, but if you're from Wisconsin - you'd appreciate it. You would need one of these burgers (and some frozen custard) if you didn't grow up here. Burgers alone aren't enough. It's a uniquely Wisconsin experience. Kopps is one of those places you can't miss when you visit Wisconsin. They specialize in frozen custard sundaes and "jumbo" hamburgers. Kopps is one of the oldest restaurants in the city where you can grab a fresh, made-to-order burger.

Kopps offers a more straightforward menu than fancy gastropubs and modern restaurants. There are cheeseburgers, hamburgers, grilled chicken burgers, and even fish burgers. But, besides ketchup, lettuce, bacon, and pickles, you can't expect any fancy toppings.

    Crave Cafe, Wisconsin

Don't judge a book by its cover. You'll thank us later if you order "The Crave Burger." However, I would take this truffle aioli-covered burger to go and eat it in the nearby Hubbard Park. Crave Cafe makes big, juicy burgers that are a satisfying and filling meal for the whole family. This small, hole-in-the-wall cafe has a minimal menu, but what it lacks in choice makes up for flavor.

Both the cheeseburger and hamburger are made from 1/3lb all-natural Angus beef. A crispy pork loin is topped with garlic aioli sauce and katsu sauce on their Japanese Katsu Burger. The Carve burger is also worth trying, and the caramelized onions and white truffle aioli are to die for. Finally, complete your order with a side of BBQ or Ranch fries, and you have yourself a mouthwatering dinner!

    Sobelman's, Wisconsin

Sobelman's has five locations in Wisconsin and is a household name in the burger industry. The interior of their restaurant may look like your typical burger bar, but they truly shine when it comes to their wide range of burger options. On the menu, you can choose from over 20 different burgers. The star of the show is their namesake burger. While they have various traditional favorites like cheeseburgers and veggie burgers, the principal is the famous cheeseburger. It comes with three types of cheese, bacon, and diced jalapenos. The Sobelman can be upgraded to a double or triple burger if you're extra hungry.

    Elsa's on the Park, Wisconsin

Elsa's on the Park serves mouthwatering burgers and handcrafted cocktails in a trendy and upscale atmosphere. During the weekends, it becomes a cocktail bar where all alcohol lovers can enjoy tasty concoctions.

If you visit this restaurant, you must sample their burger menu. Among the many flavors available is the Burger Au Poivre, covered in peppercorns and cooked in a burgundy sauce. Next, choose the Alfredo Burger, which is topped with a creamy parmesan sauce.

    Crafty Cow, Wisconsin

Wisconsin burgers are some of the best served at Crafty Cow. They are known for their Jucy Lucy-style burgers, where the cheese is inside the patty instead of on top. All of the beef on the menu is antibiotic-free and hormone-free so that you can eat with confidence. While their signature burger may be a plain patty stuffed with American cheese, its flavor is not crucial.
