(LANSING, Mich.) On Tuesday, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced that her offices are adding an additional 350,000 appointment slots at SOS branch offices through Sept. 30, CBS Detroit reports.

The move is designed to alleviate the massive backlog of SOS appointments that the state has been facing.

Also announced by Benson were plans to place greeters at office doors to assist in scheduling visits, as well as priority service for Michiganders seeking a disability placard.

Those seeking a disability placard are no longer required to schedule appointments to do so.

When Michiganders arrive at SOS branch offices without an appointment, greeters will either tell them if any staff are available to serve them or help them in scheduling a return visit. At offices without greeters, the same service will also be available when counter staff has time to approach the door between appointments.

Benson talked about the recent SOS developments, and her hope of creating a more efficient and quick process at branch offices.

“We were able to do this after discussions with our frontline workers who, concerned about the chatter here in Lansing to revert back to a broken ‘take a number and wait’ system, suggested ways they could work harder and faster to be able to handle more transactions efficiently and quickly,” Benson said. “It’s an extraordinary testament not just to their dedication to the department but their recognition that having residents schedule their visits ahead of time is a vastly superior way of doing business.”

Michigan SOS appointments can be booked online on their website.

The entire Office of the Michigan SOS press release regarding the additional appointment slots can also be viewed on the Michigan SOS website.

even with appts I've seen long lines outside. no benches for people to sit on. just open it up already. no need for appts they are not convenient.
