HOUSTON — The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is giving its undergraduate students one free course this summer as it aims not only to help students succeed in their academic path this summer but also relieve them from additional financial burdens.

“UHD is committed to expanding access and increasing graduation rates,” said Daniel Villanueva, UHD Vice President of Enrollment Management. “To validate our commitment, we’re offering undergraduate students the opportunity to accelerate toward completion by providing state, federal, and institutional resources to help them complete one class at no cost for this summer.”

This financial support is another complementary program initiative from UHD to their students. Other programs include free COVID-19 vaccines for students and families in partnership with Houston Methodist and collaboration with HEB for future vaccine events on June 9 and July 7. UHD also regularly hosts Food Fairs partnering with the Houston Food Bank by offering free groceries for students.

Those programs have supported students, either in the classroom or at home, by aiding them to focus on their studies by providing valuable resources like vaccines and nutrients.

“We believe that if we can engage students throughout the summer, they’ll be more committed to continuing in the fall and making progress toward completion,” said Villanueva. “UHD is an institution committed to access and our administration’s goal is educating Houstonians and preparing them for the workforce.”

Villanueva also added that this summer’s free course financial assistance and other initiatives are helping both students and the city by assisting students to become educated professionals who are ready to contribute to the Texas state economy.

The University of Houston-Downtown always occupies the most affordable universities in the state ranks. It offers the lowest tuition in Houston with giving students a range of scholarship offers and financial assistance. For this year, UHD, in collaboration with Univision 45, has given the very first Tu Futuro scholarship to a deserving student by covering up to four years of tuition.

The University also helped many first-time college students to reach their academic dreams by the Gator Pledge, with four-year tuition coverage for students who come from families that earn $50,000 or less annually.

Interested students can learn how to receive this summer financial assistance by visiting https://www.uhd.edu/financial/Pages/summer-financial-aid.aspx. The deadline for the application is June 11.
