    Akron City Council-Ward 1 wanted

    AKRON — On Tuesday, June 2, Council President Margo Sommerville and Vice President Jeff Fusco have announced plans to fill the vacant position created due to Ward 1 Councilman Rich Swirsky’s passing.

    Councilman Swirsky succumbed to myeloid leukemia two weeks ago on Wednesday, May 26. He was a respected, engaged, and active member of the Akron community. He was known for his dedication and commitment to justice and equality. The official press release of his passing is available on the link below:

    According to the City of Akron Charter, the Council needs to fill the vacant position by appointing a qualified person within 30 days. This nomination will be in effect until December 31, 2022. The final year of the ongoing four-year term (2023) will be filled by a general and primary election held in 2022.

    President Sommerville and Vice President Fusco will be introducing an ordinance setting the date of the election to fill the Ward 1 vacant position on June 21, 2021. The election will be held during the regular Council meeting at 7:00 p.m.

    Applications will be accepted until June 14, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. Qualified and interested residents of Ward 1 should send an email to the Office of the Clerk of Council at sbiviano@akronohio.gov.

    The letter must have the resident’s full name, address, and contact information (phone number and email). Interested candidates are also encouraged to have a CV or biography.
