SUMMIT, AKRON — The Summit County Historical Society of Akron, Ohio, will be hosting a Juneteenth Symposium on June 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. that will be free and open to the public.

The symposium will feature events such as the 'Community Talk Back: Equality and Equity', a community picnic, and a short play by Reva Golden titled _The Life of John Brown_. All activities will take place under the tent at the Perkins Stone Mansion at 550 Copley Rd. Akron.

The 'Community Talk Back' will be moderated by Rev. Dr. David Nelson, New Hope Baptist Church and Summit County Historical Society board director, and feature guest speakers Carla Chapman, Leslie Parker Barnes, Pastor Robert Dejournett, Dr. Jennifer Ross, and Pastor Kevin Rushings.

The community picnic will be held at 11:00 a.m. and catered to by A Taste of Fine Dining. Reservations are requested on EventBrite starting June 3 to assist in planning for enough food for the attendees. There will also be tastings by Nicole's Restaurant and Ire Jamaican Kitchen.

A short play by Reva Golden titled _The Life of John Brown_ will start at 11:30 a.m. Reva Golden is a local actress, playwright and Society educational staff member. She has written a short play about John Brown, and will perform as Harriet Tubman along with regional actors De Lemire as narrator, Dennis Runkle as John Brown and Corin B. Self as Frederick Douglass.

Reva Golden suggested to a group of interfaith leaders, local community members, Society board directors and staff that they work together to host a Juneteenth Symposium during the 2019 On the Table discussion at the John Brown House. However, the event had to be postponed until 2021 due to the pandemic.
