AKRON — Anjay Khandelwal, M.D., has been appointed as director of Akron Children’s Hospital’s Burn Center.

Dr. Khandelwal will be in charge of the Burn Center’s specialized inpatient and outpatient care for burn victims of all ages throughout Northeast Ohio. The American Burn Association and The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma have recognized the Burn Center for its dedication to total burn care.

Dr. Khandelwal joined the hospital’s Paul and Carol David Foundation Burn Institute a year ago as a surgeon specializing in acute and reconstructive burn surgery and surgical critical care. Dr. John Crow, the previous director, will remain as Akron Children’s associate chief medical officer.

“Our regional burn center is an important resource in Northeast Ohio, and we are pleased to have someone with Dr. Khandelwal’s experience and skill take the reins,” said the chief medical officer for Akron Children’s Hospital, Dr. Robert McGregor.

Dr. Khandelwal previously worked at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland as a staff surgeon in the division of trauma, critical care, acute care surgery, and burns. He was also the director of the Burn Care Center co-director of the Institute of Burn Ethics.

He received his medical degree from Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College in Karnataka, India, and completed his general surgery residency at Temple University/Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He completed a burn/burn reconstruction fellowship at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of North Carolina/UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Dr. Khandelwal is involved in burn education, research, prevention, and international outreach, and he also founded India’s first and only recreational camp for burned children. He lives in Lakewood with his wife, Dr. Cathleen Khandelwal, and their two daughters.

Akron Children’s is the only pediatric hospital in the country certified to treat both adult and pediatric burn patients. The Burn Center has an outpatient clinic, an inpatient unit with 12 beds, a procedure room, a triage room, and dressing change rooms. It offers services ranging from injury prevention to extreme care, complex reconstruction, and full rehabilitation.
