You should wear sunscreen all the time even indoors, according to doctors

2021-05-28

(MIAMI) Almost every day, a new anti-aging or "skin redefining" product is advertised on the market. However, there is one product touted by experts as a non-negotiable game-changer in skincare -- sunscreen. Some of the benefits of wearing sunscreen regularly include reducing your risk of sunburn, skin cancer while also helping minimize the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots.

Still, while many understand the importance of wearing sunscreen outdoors, a recent survey by the American Academy of Dermatology found young Americans lack basic knowledge on sun safety and deadly skin cancer. "It's concerning to see that so many individuals still do not understand how to protect themselves from ultraviolet exposure," says board-certified dermatologist Kenneth J. Tomecki in an AAD news release. The data may even be more concerning in places like Florida, which ranks second in the nation for the highest rate of new melanoma cases.

Not in the sun? You still need to apply.

According to dermatologists, people are exposed to potentially skin-damaging UVA and UVB rays when it’s cloudy and also when they are indoors sitting near windows. In addition, the blue light emitted from digital screens, including your computer, phone, tablet, and TV, can also damage your skin. That's why they recommend wearing sunscreen regularly regardless of the weather or climate, and even indoors.

The recommended time to apply sunscreen is 15 to 20 minutes before sun exposure so that it has time to settle into the skin. Experts agree incidental exposure will add up over a lifetime, and so including a 30+ SPF sunscreen in your daily routine, regardless of skin color, is essential.

That said, any sunblock is better than no sunblock when it comes to protecting your skin, but we've identified the best sunscreens for everyday use, according to dermatologists.
