Six states set new records for single-day increases in COVID-19 cases, according to NBC News.

Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and West Virginia all set new records Friday for single-day increases in cases of COVID-19.

Going off NBC News' tally, the states saw the following increases in cases:

  • Missouri: Almost 3,000
  • Montana: 722
  • North Dakota: 656
  • Ohio: 1,840
  • Oklahoma 1,524
  • West Virginia: 382

Coronavirus cases have also nearly doubled in New Mexico, New Hampshire and Vermont over a two-week period.

Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio couldn't account for the rise in cases but suggested it had to do with coronavirus fatigue.

He said, "We're sick of wearing masks, we're sick of all of this, and I get it, but we've got to hang in there for our kids. We've got to hang in there for ourselves . . . The best [way] to summarize it I think is that people are simply not being cautious," the governor said. "They're going about their family life and meeting people."

In Montana, cases have more than doubled in the last two weeks, prompting Gov. Steve Bullock in a series of tweets to ask Montanans to listen to health guidelines to help save lives and keep the state open

Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, suggested the continued spread of COVID-19 has less to do with public gathering and more to do with small gatherings now.

She said, "What we're seeing is, we take down our guard when we're with people we know."

According to the COVID-19 Tracking Project, as of Friday, the U.S. had recorded over 7.6 million cases of COVID-19, resulting in over 200,000 deaths. In the seven days prior, there was a 4.5% increase in total cases.
