97,000 children test positive for coronavirus as schools plan to reopen

Schools around the country are reopening for the fall semester, a recent report shows children can easily contract the coronavirus.

According to a report by the American Academy of Pediatrics, at least 97,000 children in the U.S tested positive for the coronavirus between July 16 - July 30.

With more than five million COVID-19 cases around the country, over 338,000 were from children.

Researchers found a 40% increase in cases among children in the states and cities who took part in the research.

The report states 86 children have died since May due to coronavirus.

The CDC released a report in July saying children "appear to be at lower risk for contracting COVID-19 compared to adults," and only 7% percent of COVID-19 cases were from children.

Doctor Tina Hartert of Vanderbilt University, who leads a government-funded study, says there is not enough information about children with coronavirus.

"The bottom line is we just don't know yet the degree to which children can transmit the virus," said Hartert.
