NEWARK — A nationally known “off-price retailer” will make its debut in downtown Newark next week in a development the special improvement district has warmed up to.
Burlington is slated to open at 729 Broad St. on Friday, May 10, the company has announced. It follows the opening of a Burlington Store in Clifton last week.
“We’re continuing to expand our footprint across the country and are excited to be opening new stores in New Jersey,” Michael O’Sullivan, CEO of Burlington Stores, said in the announcement. “We look forward to giving local customers the chance to discover big savings on a wide range of products.”
Newark Downtown District, the management entity for Newark’s special improvement district in the downtown area, welcomes the new shop, which is footsteps from a subway stop to Newark Penn Station.
“This addition not only grants our residents and visitors access to high-quality merchandise but also promises to invigorate foot traffic in the downtown area,” Anthony McMillan, CEO of Newark Downtown District told TAPinto Newark. “The NDD remains steadfast in its dedication to nurturing economic growth and prosperity throughout Newark.”
Burlington says it offers ladies’ apparel and menswear, including a “wide assortment” of big and tall, children’s clothing, footwear, baby goods and home décor. It also offers pet care products and toys, the company says.
The New Jersey-headquartered company says it offers these products at 60% off what other retailers offer. As an off-price retailer, it follows a business model that buys excess branded goods in bulk, enabling it to sell at lower prices.
The store contributes to a throng of commercial and retail and restaurant businesses located on Broad Street, including the Nike Factory Store and Whole Foods. The store is also located a short walking distance from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Prudential Center arena.
In 2022, Newark’s Central Planning Board considered an application for the retail space. The application called for 25,534 square feet of retail space and no parking. The location was previously occupied by a Dollar Bazar store.
Burlington said that to mark its openings, it will donate $5,000 each to two nearby elementary schools in Newark and Clifton through its partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org . The two new stores will bring the number of Burlington stores in New Jersey to 49, the company said.
Originally started as the Burlington Coat Factory in 1972 in Burlington, located in Burlington County, the retailer’s roots date back to 1924 when the Company was founded as a wholesaler of ladies’ coats and junior suits, according to its history .
