One woman was injured and 40 families were displaced in a two-alarm fire in Newark early Monday morning, April 29, authorities said.

At 12:04 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire in an occupied 5-story building at 502 Market St., Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé  said. Additional units were needed to contain the blaze and a second alarm was called, Fragé said.

A tenant was taken to University Hospital for possible smoke inhalation, Fragé said. The fire was declared under control at 1:10 a.m., Fragé said.

Nineteen families, including 37 adults and three children were relocated, Fragé said.  The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit, Fragé said.
