NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The Borough Council appointed Michael Gelormini as Probationary Police Officer at the Tuesday, May 14 meeting. Mayor Al Morgan officiated the swearing-in ceremony. He also recognized Police Week, May 12-18, and led a moment of silence for those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to all of the borough’s first responders, including the police, Volunteer Fire Department, Emergency Squad and Department of Public Works employees.
With regard to other news a group of high and middle school students appeared before the council to present their plan to organize the sixth annual Unity Fair on Sunday, June 9 at 10 am to 1 pm. This year the event will be held at the Berkeley Heights YMCA. The event is sponsored by the New Providence Diversity Committee. The event recognizes and celebrates all racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds of residents. The event includes speakers and various performances by groups representing many cultures. It also features interactive booths with different national and cultural themes and food trucks as well as Holi celebration, a Hindu Festival of Colors.
Mayor Morgan announced that the borough has received a $50,000 Union County Infrastructure Grant that will be used for road paving projects. Borough Administer Bernadette Cuccaro noted that the upcoming road work schedule will be posted on the borough’s website. She also said that the Passaic Avenue Bridge upgrade project will likely begin sometime this year. The project started in 2019, but was derailed with issues with the contractor and the litigations regarding this matter remain ongoing. Once the project restarts, it will take 12 months to complete during which time the bridge will stay closed. She noted that this will be “a painful time” for drivers that are used to travel this way.
Additionally, the council approved the following road closures for community events:
Monday, May 27, 2024 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for the annual Memorial Day Parade: Springfield Avenue from Central Avenue to Gales Drive;
