Cox, Nansemond River, New Kent, Smithfield & Poquoson head to state semis
The state quarterfinals getting underway on Tuesday for softball, girls and boys soccer along with baseball. Some had success while others struggled. In baseball for Class 6, Western Branch had to play catch up against Colgan. After falling behind early 6-0, the Bruins managed a run in the 5th off a walk and added another as they lost 10-2. The same can be said for Grassfield in Class 6 as they fell to Freedom 12-2.

Jayne Pierce Thomas, 92, of New Kent
Jayne Pierce Thomas of New Kent died peacefully at her home on June 2, 2023, after a brief illness and a wonderful life. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, Albert Lee Thomas. She is survived by her daughters Jayne Thomas Pinelli, (George), Cynthia Thomas Greer, (Wayne), one granddaughter, Ann Thomas Greer Lepore, (Chris), and one great granddaughter, Charlotte Greer Lepore. Survivors also include her sisters Margie Pierce Harrison and Jodye Pierce Pfister as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Michael L. Whitley, age 74, passed away at home in New Kent, VA on May 27, 2023 surrounded by his family. A native of Virginia Beach, he retired after 32 years of service to the Federal Government-Civil Service including stints at the Joint Forces Intelligence Command, Cinclantfleet, Public Works, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California. A Hampton man who stole a classic vehicle from a New Kent resident will spend the next three-and-a-half years in prison. Brandon Wayne Milligan, 29, of 5 Quinn Street, entered guilty pleas to six counts of firearm larceny, one count of grand theft auto, one count of forging a title, and one count of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretenses during Tuesday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. One count each of breaking and entering, possession of a weapon by a violent felon, conspiracy to commit grand theft auto, and conspiracy to possess a stolen vehicle were dropped as part of the agreement.
