GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — It’s been over five years since Hurricane Florence slammed into Eastern North Carolina. And all these years later, recovery is still an ongoing process.

Hazel Royal and her husband used their church in New Bern to provide food and aid after the storm. Danny Batten owns Surf, Wind and Fire, located in downtown New Bern. It’s back in business but more visible scars exist in places like Duffyfield, where the Royals live.

New Bern is more resilient now than ever before. For example, the New Stanley White Recreation Center will serve as an effective shelter when it’s finished, but officials we talked to said more work needs to be done before the next big storm.
