Amid Angst for Rest of Us, Good News for Wall Street

(This content was created with the help of AI.) Wall Street's bonus machine isn't slowing down, and New York is poised to cash in. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli expects the securities industry bonus pool to grow this year, even though the city had penciled in a sharp decline, reports the Wall Street Journal. Banks are on track to clear more than $90 billion in profits, fueled by deal-making, IPOs, AI, and choppy markets, after a 2025 in which the average Wall Street bonus hit about $247,000. The Mamdani-Hochul pied-à-terre tax is based on a fatal flaw

The unfolding court drama over New York City’s pied-à-terre tax isn’t just about billionaires. It’s about fundamental rights of all Americans. New York’s Democratic Party is trashing those rights and violating the legal principles that underpin America’s successful economy in order to finance their socialist spending spree. Between elections, we must go to court in defense of these rights and fight hard. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Kathy Hochul and Kamar H. Samuels attend an event to bring NYC Public Schools procurement into the 21st century in New York, Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026. Camara Porter/AdMedia/MediaPunch/Shutterstock On Tuesday, New York State Supreme Court Judge Wayne Ozzi ruled that Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rollout of the pied-à-terre tax deprived homeowners of their due process rights. The city had notified some 17,000 house- and apartment-owners that they owed the tax and had a mere 30 days to prove otherwise — or be hit with hefty penalties. It was flipping the burden of proof onto homeowners to show their property is their primary residence and exempt from the tax. Yikes! Guilty until proven innocent. Legal trouble for Mamdani’s pied-à-terre tax is just beginning Ozzi ordered the city to redo the rollout, this time honoring property owners’ due-process

Apple picking in NY: 4 orchards worth the fall trip

New York is the second-largest apple-producing state in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with tens of thousands of acres devoted to apple production across the Empire State. New York produces millions of bushels of apples annually, and many orchards offer visitors the chance to buy pre-picked apples or pick their own straight from the tree. Some orchards offer more than a traditional U-pick experience to attract visitors, with family-friendly activities including wagon rides, yard games, playgrounds, fresh-baked goods and other social media-worthy fall treats. Here are four favorite apple-picking spots across New York, all of which offer additional activities: Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards This family-owned and operated orchard in Lafayette, Onondaga County, has repeatedly been selected by USA TODAY readers as the top orchard in the nation, most recently topping the list in 2024. The orchard also operates a distillery, tasting room and tavern, bakery, general store and kids' area with a variety of activities. It regularly hosts concerts as part of its popular summer concert series at the 1911 Tasting Room. Beak & Skiff is open daily. Pick-your-own requires a wagon ride to the orchard, which runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Attorney at Law: Handling estate debt responsibilities in New York

It is a common misconception to assume that your debts do not follow you when you pass away. When a person dies with outstanding liabilities, his debts are typically owed by, and paid out of, his estate. In practice, this means that the estate’s executor or administrator is responsible for determining all valid debts, and ensuring that they are paid from the assets or property left in the estate.

Attorney General James Warns New Yorkers About Price Gouging During Severe Coastal Storm

New York Attorney General Letitia James today issued a consumer alert warning New York consumers and businesses of price gouging during a storm expected to bring heavy wind and rain, as well as potential flooding, to New York this weekend. Governor Hochul has declared a state of emergency in New York City and Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties in advance of the storm. New York’s price gouging law prevents businesses from taking advantage of consumers by selling essential goods or services at an excessively higher price during market disruptions or emergencies. Attorney General James is urging New Yorkers who see higher prices on essential goods and services to file complaints with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).
