Concord fire crews respond to car crashes on Wednesday
CONCORD, Va. (WSET) — Crews with the Concord Volunteer Fire Department were out and about Wednesday responding to multiple car crashes in the area. CVFD said crews were first dispatched around 7:30 in the morning for a crash involving two cars on the Mt. Athos to 460W exit ramp.

Town of Hurt accepts garbage collection service bid
The Town of Hurt council unanimously moved to accept a bid for garbage collection services from Chatham-based First Piedmont Corporation during its May 7 business meeting. According to the accepted bid, the town will enter a three-year contract with First Piedmont at a cost of roughly $49,000 per year, totaling about $148,000 over the three-year period.

Senior Night held for ACS Tennis
On Thursday afternoon, May 9 before the final home tennis match against William Campbell, Altavista tennis coach Eli Anderson and Efrain Otero recognized Alicia (Alex) Dease as being the only senior on the tennis team. She is the daughter of Brittany and William Rosenoff. She has been a member of the tennis program for four years. Plans after graduation are to attend CVCC and major in Criminal Justice and work in Law Enforcement of some kind. She plans to continue her tennis career.

Boxwood Cottage opened its doors to customers at 28 N. Main Street in Chatham on Friday, May 3. The vendor-based shop offers a variety of goods, including vintage and antique products; hand-made wares and jewelry; house and garden flags; signage; books; kitchenware; and home décor.
Altavista Boys Soccer holds Senior Night
Altavista boys soccer hosted Nelson County on Friday night for Senior night. Altavista lost 0 to 8. Two seniors were recognized. #3 Dillon Hartless was escorted by his mom Teresa. He has played for varsity soccer for two years as attacking mid. Hartless will be attending college majoring in culinary. #6 Lukas Niblett was escorted by Rodney and Susan Niblett. He has played for the boys varsity soccer team for three years as center back. He is a member of the SCA, YPC, National Honor Society, and Latin Club. Niblett plans to attend the University of Lynchburg while majoring in Bio-Medical science.

(WSET) — Two-time NASCAR national champion and six-time South Boston Speedway champion Peyton Sellers swept the double 65-lap Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division races that highlighted the ABC 13, WSET-TV Race Night presented by Bojangles event Saturday night at South Boston Speedway and became the fifth different winner in the division this season.
Ashwell homers late to lift Altavista over Gretna
The Altavista varsity softball team hit the road this past Wednesday (May 8th) and knocked off local rival Gretna 6-5 in extra innings to sweep the season series between the two schools. Altavista got a huge go-ahead and eventual game-winning home run from Iris Ashwell, who cleared the centerfield fence in the top of the eighth inning to secure the victory.
